It's more the chocobo race to get out of it, on such a mediocre chocobo, that's the real pain unless you're using the stamina restore trick.
At least it's a very small part of the game, you can get Laser earlier than elsewhere there (which is far more useful than the Gravity materia,) and it does fill in some of Barret's back-story. The prison in VIII isn't all that annoying - you can just stick enc-none on for an easy run, and you can get one of Zell's moves and an infinite number of Rosetta Stones (4xAbility) there, so it does have its uses.
