Howling frustration Well, for me it was an exercise in such incredible frustration, anger, hideous rage and temper tantrums, so this game better be good.
See, on ebay, there's quite a few copies of FFT for the Playstation - only one problem; they're all NTSC, and so won't work on European models (thanks boys,) unless you've invalidated your warranty modding it, or have a funky swapdisc system (none of which have ever worked for me.)
So, last week I speculatively ordered a copy, as it was only a few quid, in the hope that I could either make the swapdisc work, or finally resort to modchipping the damn thing (see how devoted to this damn game series I am.)
What followed on Sunday, as I found an emulator for the PC, was 6 hours of invalid plugins, missing bios, funny crashes, staccato sound and weird graphical errors as I struggled to make every last plugin, setting and moronic add-on work together.
Touch wood though, although it's still defiantly peppering me with a missing .dll file message every time I stick the disc in (even though the file is in the emulator directory, system, system32 and windows directories, just to give it a chance to locate the file,) IT'S WORKING! I'm currently looking at the first battle, running almost flawlessly on my system.
All I can say is, this damn game better be worth it!

Re: Howling frustration I'm quite confident in saying that after all that trouble the game will be worth it. It has a great storyline, a great unappreciated musical score, a good battle system, and some of the battles present quite a challenge. Its a great game, so enjoy it while everything is working alright.

Ulbrec: ...Ennelia and Braston will meet you there, Targos's fate hinges on your success.
My response: I think Targos's fate hinges on how much Shawford can pay us from the Targos treasury.
… It's worth it, It has a great story line, only problem is probably a few battles that are near impossible, just do certain side quests and you can ge some cool stuff
… There are no battles in this game that are near impossible, assuming you know the battle system and have gotten the right job classes and abilities. That being said, I did have to restart my game the first time I played because i saved to the same file and couldn't pass one of the battles I was on. Since I've played it enought times and know how the game works, all of the battles are easy.

You havent fought the one with the Chocobo's have you? I also almost got killed when that one dude turnedinto a monster and you have to fight him alone, well i never fought that one. My brother did it and never got it
Re: Howling frustration I've beaten the game several times. I remember the battle with the chocobos, and it's more difficult than you first think. Which battle are you talking about where a dude turns into a monster? That happens many times in the game.
Re: Howling frustration As much as I hate double posting, I just reread the reply and have noticed that I misunderstood the question.
You're talking about the battle with Varius, I believe. The White Knight whom you defeat one on one becomes a monster later, correct?
During the one on one battle, make sure Ramza is either a ninja or a knight. If a Ninja, make sure you have the Equip Armour ability to up his hit points. If a Knight, make sure you have Two Swords equipped. I prefer the ninja class for the speed. (You get the initiative, too.)
In either case, make sure you have the chemist auto potion and you have sold your potions and Hi-Potions and have a large stock of X-potions. Have a High Brave to get a maximum rate of trigger to heal for 150. This will almost completely heal every attack you take and doesn't cost a single turn.
This should make your battle rather easy, unless you are unlucky and Auto-Potion doesn't trigger. For this reason, set Ramza's second attack set to Item in case you need the X-Potion.
For the following monter battle, Ramza will get auto first attack. Use it either to heal if you need it, or take a double sword attack out on Velius. The people you need to bring are Agrias, Mustadio, either as a chemist or an engineer with the Item as secondary attack set, and 2 Lancers with a maxed out Jump attack.
Send the 2 lancers to the extreme left and right and have them perform constant Jump attacks on the main monster. Agrias will get double damage on Velius with her Holy Explosion attack. Mustadio can attack if you have a free shot with his gun and no one needs healing. Ramza should be able to take out the demons on his own with the double sword attack, Auto Potion and Item commands. Keep everyone well spaced out unless Mustadio needs to move in close to heal. Velius will alwasy set Cyclops on a specif person. Move the target completely away from everyone else, unless it's one of the Lancers. use their jump attack to evade the summon spell.
