Re: Newcomer needs help for FF Nah I say start with 10. It's pretty easy, doesn't take too long and the story is wonderful. Then when you see how great Final Fantasy is, try 7.. You must first be deemed worthy.
Re: Newcomer needs help for FF Some people find FF 10's Grid System terribly confusing, though.
FF9 is probably the easiest, in terms of Battle System, of all the PS and later games. The possible downside to that is that some people don't like the artwork.
Story-wise, FF7 is my favorite. FF10 has a good story, and if you are logically minded, the Grid System is a piece of cake to work up on. If you aren't good at planning ahead and thinking logically, the Grid system is a nightmare, though.
FF7s materia system is simple enough, IMHO, and even basic arrangements are enough to beat the game.

Re: Newcomer needs help for FF I think its not a good idea to play 10 first because..
1) The graphics and battle system are a lot better
2) There are voices and very well done cut-scenes, so its more like a movie (a more modern game unlike the others)
3) The sphere grid system may prove to be confusing to understand
4) You'd then may decide to play say 7 after for a little while and wonder what all the hype is all about, and get discouraged by the graphics, gameplay, etc.
But then again 7 in most people's opinion is the best FF so you may like that one and play the others but not like them as much. 9 is also a very good option. I wouldn't say 8 as the junctioning system is quite difficult to understand first aswell.
Or you could just read the plot summary for each one, and find out which one interests you the most.
Re: Newcomer needs help for FF Although everyone loves 7, i'd actually not bother back tracking that far, having played it. It can be hard to get a copy to play, and although it was the most popular, the newer ones could very well better it... (Eh, i ain't played them. Uninformed opinion much. 'From what i've heard.') But it seems pointless to say 'play the ye olde ones' when newer and more... 'now' versions are available. *shrugs* I got 7 since i wanted to play it because it had been 'the' game, and mainly because of Advent Children. If FF's start to come out on 360 (and i think thats likely, last i heard) i'll start playing them from there. Then if you REALLY feel like it or have the zest, go back and play a few earlier ones. Make sense?
Now if once a upon time i'd had a playstation console, my tale would be different... But hey. Yet another viewpoint for you to consider.

Re: Newcomer needs help for FF Well the thing is the FF's nowadays (after 10/when square-enix took over) haven't been as great, they've lost lets say the 'soul' the older ones had. They're changing to attract the newer modern gamers, not the old FF fans they should be I'd say. So by putting more games on other consoles, they're only just trying to make more money and attract newer gamers. I very much doubt FF13, 14, 15, 20, 50 etc, etc however far they'd go would remain 'Final Fantasy' if you know what I mean.
So the greatest ones are the older ones (when it was just Squaresoft IMO) better to start off with an older one.
How come you haven't played the others? Your missing out!
Re: Newcomer needs help for FF Think i've mentioned a couple of times that i've never owned a PS. Me bro did but he never was a fan of role playing games. And when i was a lot younger my friend had some final fantasy games... but i never got into them. Played about half an hour of 8 and didn't pick it up again. And i watched her playing kingdom hearts thinking 'WHY on earth are disney characters running around with a little kid with a huge key?' And i played about half an hour of that one too. Think i couldn't figure out how to get off the island. ... thats going back a while..
Aye aye, but i'm saying... since FF is quite a huge popular series, they have to keep it fresh so they get new fans. To keep it marketable they've gotta try new things. So the newer games will be targeted at newer fans, so it'd make sense to try the newer ones to get a general feel of them. IF you have the zest, the spark, ect, you might find it worth your time to go back and play the older ones too.
I do see what your saying (and it makes sense to play from as early in the series up to the current one), but cause i haven't played them for years and grown up with them, the newer ones interest me more... if i actually got into the series, i'd be happy to back-play older ones. 7-10 and so on. Ect.
