Thankfully most of the public schools over here don't require you to wear a uniform. During my years in private school I had to wear one and I hated it. We also had special days during the year called "casual clothes day" where we could wear a t-shirt and jeans. Of course you had to pay the school in order to do that.
I don't see what the problem is with letting people wear what they want. Like Zeen said there should be some guidelines but wearing a uniform doesn't help you learn. As far as I'm concerned schools are for education and wearing a uniform doesn't assist that process.

So you had to pay to wear casual clothes in Baltimore and England?

In private schools yes. The public schools around here don't have a uniform policy.

In all public schools around here we have to pay to wear what casual clothes, but we could only do it on a certain day which they decide.

Hmmm...
Almost all Western Australian schools all have a uniform policy of some sort, private or not. Naturally, public schools have a markedly more relaxed policy than private ones.
For those that don't know, I've been through Catholic Education for 12 years now. And all through those 12 years, we have had people complain about the uniform, loss of individuality and non-impact upon education per-se being the major arguments.
Personally, I don't care whether or not uniforms are worn, but I sure don't mind the idea that going to university means no uniforms. However, I'll bring up a reason or two why some folk think uniforms are a good idea.

1. As Acebloke masterfully pointed out, they identify you. With this in mind, you won't get lost on trips, (a nightmare for any teacher of young children!) and it's easy to identify you. Plus, it's an incentive to be at slightly better behaved. I assure you, it's easier to identify that kid urinating on passing cars if he's got a school crest branded on him! =P

2. Socio-economic background is substantially cloaked. Ever had the case where others stereotype you according to what you wear? It happens, plain and simple, especially among children and teenagers. Woe betide the poor child that can't afford trendy clothes and gets persecuted because of it. With a uniform, it doesn't matter what end of the socio-economic spectrum you are; you're on the same level as everyone else.

3. Private schools are private institutions. They can decide what their kiddies wear in exchange for an education. =P

As I said, I don't really mind uniforms. I just thought the pro-uniform side of the coin needed a bit of support.

PS: My former school's uniform was quite distinct. With green being a primary colour in the uniform, most public school children dubbed us "Christmas trees!" ^_^

Secunda: "Did someone just say 'weeaboo?' Because I heard someone say 'weeaboo'."
Persons 2-10: "Wee-a-boo! Wee-a-boo!"

Yeah those are good points Arbiter. My main complaint about the uniform was that it was too dressy and felt rather uncomfortable. If a school does institute a uniform policy I wish they would just make it some kind of tshirt and jeans type thing, but it always seems to be some sort of formal looking attire.

I don't think there's much of a problem wearing school uniform. All my eighteen years in school I had been wearing school uniform. It's quite all right once you've gotten used to it. Though there are lots of times we get jealous of people not restricted to school uniforms in other countries. The girls here all have to wear skirts with their school uniforms. Most uniforms are collared with stiffy shirts and we have to wear the school badge and stuff. It's pretty formal and quite uncomfortable.

There's a good point to wearing school uniforms. You don't have to waste time worrying about what to wear tomorrow. Plus it looks neat and tidy when everyone wears the same colour.

But if you wear school uniforms and walk down the street, people will automatically look at what school you're from and evaluate you according to your school. For example if you're from a top school people will kinda treat you with more respect and wow at you. But if you're from a not so famous one, then sometimes you get ostrascized and pointed at. It happens occasionally here.

The most informal uniform I've seen in my country is that of UWC. They wear polo tee-shirt and trousers.

More good points zacjay ^ + Praise.

That happens here too, people would treat you differently from your uniform. I remember when I was about 12 some really tall 18+ year old lads came up to me and went "You from Welling School?!" and started laughing. Weirdos.. emoticon

There are quite a few good and bad points when it comes to uniform. But in the end, I just felt like I was going to a prison. With everything having to be perfect with uniform. I think it restricts pupils from their normal life outside of school. (Not being able to wear the new top they got for example) In the end, its better for students not to wear uniform. I think it'll effect the way they work, and they'd be more comfortable in school.
