Heh, yeah the NI situation isnt nice. Basicaly Northern Ireland was meant to be the part that wanted to stay in the union, and effectively the empire at the time. The republic of Ireland was the seperatist force started by Sinn Fein, which remains a political party in Eire, and also as a contrevercial party in Northern Ireland.
So yeah, NI stayed with the union, but the Irish republican army(IRA) didnt like the split, and caused a number of TERRORIST ATTACKS ! OMG TERRORISTS BEFORE 9/11 OMG NO CANT BE TRUE. Cough, sorry, yeah the IRA bombed london pretty much every day during the 70's and early 80's, course they wernt muslim, so its not that much of a deal these days, barely gets a mention.
The reason why NI doesnt have the devolved powers like wales and scotland is because the damn christians cant stop killing themselfs. Ireland is very tribal religion wise, it all started about 400+ years ago when Cromwell tried to protistantise Ireland after the english civil war(s). Ireland, catholic at the time, didnt like this much, and caused a rift between Ireland and England ever since. Course, there was enough protisants in the north part of Ireland to back a partical split of the Island, and also enough to cause the two christian groups to fight each other.
Politics wise, Northern Ireland is still based on religion, its like US elections in a way, either your a unionist protisant or a seperatist catholic, there isnt much swing at all.
